Maybe 96 Teams is a good thing?!

Can more March Madness really be a bad thing?

So the NCAA is talking about expanding by nearly 50% and making this a 96-team tourney.

The cold hard truth is – does it really matter?

The lowest seed to ever win the tourney is the No.8 seed (Villanova over Georgetown in 1985) so how much does it affect the tournament that the bottom 8 seeds in each region will have to play another game?

What it does allow for is some of the smaller conference regular season champions, who had been upset in the tournament, to get a well-earned spot into the Big Dance.  You could argue there are several teams every year in the NIT field that are better than some of the teams earning automatic bids.

Will you really complain when there is 2 more days of March Madness to decrease your productivity at work?

The one big argument is that it will kill off the NIT altogether and its hard to argue it.  However, the NCAA could consider a Euro soccer-style Champions League/Europa League format where the losers of the first two rounds end up playing in the NIT?  You could drop in teams as they fall out of the NCAA tourney and parachute them into the NIT.

Instead of killing off the NIT, maybe it will make it much more intriguing!  How about a North Carolina-Kansas quarterfinal in the NIT!  I'd say let's have some serious fun and let the fans choose which teams will face each other in the NIT via online voting instead of a seeding system.

What do you think?
